The Old Man and The Lake
Oil · 8 x 10 in · 2018
From the tall reeds along the water's edge, a solitary figure casts his line — unhurried, at ease, exactly where he belongs. This intimate scene, painted from a photograph taken by the artist's sister, captures their father at 89 years old, doing what he loved. The lush golden grasses of the foreground draw the eye deep into the painting, past the lone fisherman, and into the cool, moody blues of the lake beyond. The treeline, touched with warmth and shadow, gives the scene a timeless, almost impressionistic quality. Nothing about this moment is rushed. Everything about it is right. The Old Man and The Lake is more than a landscape — it is a portrait of a life well-lived, painted with love by a daughter who was paying attention.
